Mr. Baker

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions how many aeroplane flights he estimates occurred in(a) 1996 and (b) 1997 in UK airspace in which radioactive material was carried. [45378]

The Department does not collect information of the kind requested. The Department has no more recent estimate than that given to the hon. Member on 14 July 1997,Official Report, column 15.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if the Government will make it their policy further to restrict the transportation of radioactive materials(a) via the Channel Tunnel and (b) on their passenger ferries.[45379]

Such transport is permitted subject to(a) the rules and restrictions of Eurotunnel, as approved by the Channel Tunnel Safety Authority of the UK/France Intergovernmental Commission and (b) compliance with The Merchant Shipping (Dangerous Goods and Marine Pollutants) Regulations 1990 (SI 1990 No. 2605) and Merchant Shipping Notice No. M 1620, "The Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Marine Pollutants in Packaged Form on Ships". These place no restriction on the number of transports.
