Mr. Burstow

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will list the pilot schemes announced since 1 May by his Department that involve local authorities in a lead or partnership capacity; if he will list each of the local authorities involved in each case; and what revenue and capital funding each local authority will receive through the pilot in (i) 1997–98, (ii) 1998–99, (iii) 1999–2000 and (iv) 2000–2001.[45334]

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State announced the first wave of successful Health Action Zone pilots on 31 March 1998,Official Report, columns 1033–36. These are listed in Table 1. We have not yet announced the funding arrangements.

Twelve of the thirty-five Best Value pilots, which started in April 1998, have a personal social services element. Table two lists the PSS pilots, which are expected to be self-financing. Successful bids were announced by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions which has the lead on Best Value in local government.

My hon. Friend the Minister for Public Health launched the Health Schools Initiative on 14 May 1998. Eight pilot health education partnerships will each receive £150,000 from the Healthy Schools Initiative. The partnerships are:

  • Cornwall
  • Doncaster
  • Durham
  • Hounslow
  • Manchester
  • Norfolk
  • Staffordshire
  • West Sussex.
