HC Deb 11 June 1998 vol 313 cc681-2W
Dr. Lynne Jones

To ask the President of the Board of Trade if she will list the number of complaints she has received(a) from hon. Members and (b) from others in each of the last five years about the Institute of Chartered Accountants; and how many of these relate to their arbitration scheme.[44914]

Mr. Ian McCartney

The information is not available in the form requested; the approximate number of representations made to the Department about the Institute's role as a Recognised Statutory Body for company auditors is as follows:

Number of cases
MPs Others
1994 10
1995 11
1996 6 6
1997 22 18
1998 14 16

Note:

The figures include ongoing representations from the same person on the same issue. Figures do not include duplicate copies

The Department's responsibility is for the effectiveness of the system of audit regulation. We do not know whether the underlying disputes with the Institute's members went to independent arbitration, nor is the information available from the Institute.

Comparable information is not available in connection with the Institute's responsibilities as an Insolvency recognised professional body.
