To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, pursuant to the answer of 24 April 1998,Official Report, column 722, on human rights, if he will state which aspects of the Government's human rights policy are his Department's responsibilities. [44877]

Mr. Mike O'Brien

The Home Office is responsible for the Human Rights Bill[Lords]. We also work with other Departments on the operation and application of international mechanisms for protecting human rights, with a particularly strong interest in the European Convention on Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the European and United Nations Conventions against torture.
