HC Deb 11 June 1998 vol 313 c638W
Mr. Hancock

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how much has been spent on repairs for HMS `Ocean' since her launch; and what repairs have been carried out. [45127]

Mr. Spellar

The cost of repairs to the damage sustained to the hull of HMS Ocean during her launch on 11 October 1995 amounted to £1.125 million and was paid by the MOD under its Indemnity scheme. The ship also underwent repairs, by VSEL sub contractors, to her tail shaft bearings while in dry dock at Portsmouth in May 1998. The cost and liability for the damaged tail shaft has yet to be established.

Mr. Hancock

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what assessment he has made of damage caused to HMS 'Ocean' during refloating at Portsmouth naval base following repairs; and if he will make a statement. [45126]

Mr. Spellar

During the re-floating of HMS Ocean on 2 June 1998, some very minor damage was sustained to a handrail. This was repaired immediately at no significant cost.
