To ask the Prime Minister, pursuant to his answer of 3 June 1998,Official Report, column 215, concerning duty free, what the stance was of Germany and Italy at the ECOFIN Council meeting on 19 May towards reversal of the decision to end the duty free trade; if support for a study into the effects of the ending of duty free trade was given by France, Spain and Greece; and if he will make a statement. [holding answer 9 June 1998]The Rules of Procedure of the Council of Ministers make clear that, in general, deliberations in Council meetings are covered by the rules of professional privacy. It would therefore be inappropriate to give details of the views expressed by other delegates in the Council's discussion of duty free on 19 May, at which no formal vote was taken.
