HC Deb 11 June 1998 vol 313 c662W
Mr. Waterson

To ask the Attorney-General if he will use his powers relating to unduly lenient sentences in respect of the sentence imposed on Damien Thorne on 21 May. [45216]

The Attorney-General

The Criminal Justice Act 1988 gives me power, in specific circumstances, to apply to the Court of Appeal for sentences which I consider to be unduly lenient to be reviewed. The Act imposes a twenty-eight day time-limit, starting from the date of sentence, within which an application in a particular case must be notified to the Court of Appeal. The Crown Prosecution Service is to provide me with the necessary case papers so that I can consider the sentence imposed on Damien Thorne within the statutory time-limit.
