HC Deb 08 June 1998 vol 313 c476W
Mr. Webb

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what estimates she has made of the level of income required to support a family with children relative to a family with no children. [44630]

Mr. Keith Bradley

There are many factors which affect the financial needs of a family, including the presence of children. These are reflected in the structure of allowances in the income-related benefits.

The new welfare system will provide better support to families with children. That is why we have announced a £2.50 increase in Child Benefit for the eldest child and a £2.50 increase in the family premium in the income-related benefits. We have announced further help for vulnerable families with young children through a £2.50 increase in the under 11 child allowances.

These measures will help families to give every child a better start.
