HC Deb 05 June 1998 vol 313 c370W
Mr. Reed

To ask the Prime Minister what plans he has for future relations with poor indebted countries following the G8 summit. [43468]

The Prime Minister

Debt was one of the main themes at Birmingham. The conclusions of the discussions mark a significant step forward, both in recognising the need for progress in debt relief by the year 2000, and in endorsing proposals put forward by the UK for faster debt relief to post conflict countries.

The British Government will be pressing for this work to be advanced urgently amongst other creditors and in the international financial institutions. The Department for International Development will also continue to build partnerships with developing countries as set out in its recent white paper.
