Mr. Evans

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many service personnel were injured(a) in the United Kingdom and (b) abroad during (i) 1997, (ii) 1996 and (ii) 1995. [43481]

Dr. Reid

The numbers of Service personnel injured in the UK and abroad in the years 1995, 1996 and 1997 were as follows:

Notes:

1. The figures provided include injuries resulting in death.

2. The figures for the United Kingdom include injuries which occurred in UK waters and the North Atlantic.

The numbers of Service personnel medically discharged in the years 1995, 1996 and 1997 owing to injuries sustained in the UK and abroad were as follows:

Notes:

1. The figures provided represent the numbers of medical discharges resulting from injury irrespective of the year in which the injury was sustained. The total number of injuries occurring in 1995, 1996 and 1997 which resulted in medical discharge within the same year or a later year could be compiled only at disproportionate cost.

2. The figures for the United Kingdom include injuries which occurred in UK waters and the North Atlantic.
