HC Deb 01 June 1998 vol 313 cc95-6W
Mr. Mackinlay

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many service personnel lost their lives in the past 12 months while in action, or as a consequence of wounds received during active service, outside Northern Ireland; and what was the country or coastal region of their deaths or wounds which consequently resulted in their deaths. [42897]

Dr. Reid

[holding answer 21 May 1998]: This is a matter for the Chief Executive of the Defence Analytical Services Agency (DASA). I have asked the Chief Executive to write to my hon. Friend.

Letter from Paul Altobell to Mr. Andrew Mackinlay, dated 1 June 1998: I am replying to your questions to the Secretary of State for Defence about the number of service personnel who have lost their lives in action outside of Northern Ireland over the past 12 months, as this matter falls within my area of responsibility. I am happy to report that our records show that, in the period 1 April 1997 to 19 May 1998, no service personnel died as a result of battle wounds or injuries as a direct result of action by or against an organised enemy. I hope you find this information helpful.
