To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many police man hours were involved in enforcing the current speed limits in Lancashire in the years(a) 1994, (b) 1995, (c) 1996 and (d) 1997; and how many convictions resulted from this; [43477]

(2) how many police man hours were involved in enforcing the current drink driving laws in Lancashire in the years (a) 1994, (b) 1995, (c) 1996 and (d) 1997; and how many convictions for drink-related offences resulted from this. [43478]

Figures for officer hours dedicated to drink drive and speed enforcement in the years requested are not available. Officers are deployed on many different duties and commonly deal with a wide range of offences on a tour of duty.

Convictions for drink driving in the force area were:

  • 1994: 2,645
  • 1995: 2,828
  • 1996: 3,211.

Convictions for speeding offences were:

  • 1994: 2,223
  • 1995: 2,945
  • 1996: 4,629.

Figures for 1997 convictions are not yet available.
