§ Rev. Martin SmythTo ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what estimates he has made of the costs of extending reproductive health care and abortion services in Northern Ireland; and which aspects will receive priority. [42685]
§ Mr. WorthingtonNo estimate of costs for extending reproductive health care and abortion services in Northern Ireland has been made. The provision of infertility services is a matter for the Health and Social Services Boards which are at present engaged in reviews of the infertility services provided to their local populations. Abortions are illegal in Northern Ireland except where66W necessary to save the life of the mother or where continuation of the pregnancy would involve risk of serious injury to her physical or mental health.
§ Dr. TongeTo ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if she will ensure that the people of Northern Ireland have the same access to reproductive health care and abortion services as is available in England and Wales. [42567]
§ Mr. WorthingtonAs in England and Wales, where the provision of infertility services is a matter for the health authorities, the provision of infertility services in Northern Ireland is a matter for the Health and Social Services Boards, which are at present engaged in reviews of the services provided to their local populations. Abortion is illegal in Northern Ireland except where necessary to save the life of the mother or where continuation of the pregnancy would involve risk of serious injury to her physical or mental health. It would therefore not be lawful to grant access to abortion services on the same grounds as in England and Wales, where the law is different.
