Mr. Viggers

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department for what reason the current and capital probation grant and credit approvals to local authorities were reduced between 1996–97 and 1997–98. [42401]

Ms Quin

Probation service budgets for 1997–98 were decided by the previous Government and announced to services before that financial year began. We adhered to those budgets after the General Election in line with our commitment to maintain public spending in 1997–98 and 1998–99 in accordance with the previous Government's spending plans.
