HC Deb 01 June 1998 vol 313 c56W
Mr. Mullin

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what action was taken as a result of the review of suicide and self-harm in prison, conducted by Judge Tumim in 1990; and if he will make a statement. [43184]

Ms Quin

Judge Tumim's report on suicides and self-harm in prisons in England and Wales made wide-ranging recommendations with implications across prison regimes. The Prison Service's response was shaped through a newly created central unit which was set up to develop suicide awareness strategies. Following detailed examination of the recommendations in the report, a revised strategy on caring for the suicidal was introduced in 1994. A further review by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons is now underway and will help to refine strategies further.
