Mr. Flight

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions, pursuant to the answer to the hon. Member for Worthing, East and Shoreham (Mr. Loughton) of 5 May 1998,Official Report, column 311, if he will list the petitions he has received objecting to new house building in West Sussex, indicating the number of signatures on each petition. Mr. Raynsford

Two petitions have been received. One from residents of Mid Sussex district with about 9,700 signatures and the other from residents of the Horsham district area with some 14,000 signatures.

Mr. Loughton

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions, pursuant to his answer of 5 May 1998,Official Report, column 311, if the number of 3,000 objections includes (a) petitions and (b) multiple signature letters; and if he will publish the number of individuals who have raised objections with him. Mr. Raynsford

The number of 3,000 objections includes:(a) 718 postcards in response to a campaign sponsored by the CPRE Sussex Branch and about 1,100 responses to a campaign organised by a local newspaper; and (b) about 1,100 letters some of which are signed by more than one member of a household.
