HC Deb 01 June 1998 vol 313 c142W
Mr. Loughton

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many children are diagnosed as suffering from Asperger Syndrome in(a) the United Kingdom and (b) West Sussex. [43284]

Mr. Boateng

I have been asked to reply.

Data are not collected centrally on the number of cases of Asperger Syndrome. Research in Scandinavia has suggested a prevalence rate of 36 per 10,000 population. The National Autistic Society estimate there are 47,400 children with Asperger Syndrome in the United Kingdom.
