HC Deb 31 July 1998 vol 317 c767W
Jackie Ballard

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what plans he has to regulate vanity publishers. [53429]

Mr. Mandelson

[holding answer 30 July 1998]: I have no plans to introduce specific legislation on vanity publishing. I believe that existing consumer protection legislation is adequate to deal with those unscrupulous companies who may seek to exploit authors. This includes the Trade Descriptions Act 1968, the Misrepresentation Act 1967, the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 and the Control of Misleading Advertisements Regulations 1988.
