HC Deb 31 July 1998 vol 317 c621W
Mr. Caton

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what assessment he has made of the effectiveness of the DVLA's recent We Are Clamping Down campaign. [54613]

Ms Glenda Jackson

The national scheme to wheelclamp and impound unlicensed vehicles was introduced in August 1997 and is being extended progressively across the country. In the 8 months to March 1998, it is estimated that some 80,000 additional vehicles were licensed as a result of the campaign, raising an extra £8.5 million. Support from the police, local authorities and the public has been enthusiastic.
