To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on the arrangements for paying tax in euros after the single currency is introduced on 1 January 1999. [54980]

The Chancellor of the Exchequer announced in his speech to the CBI on 10 November 1997 that businesses, if they wished, would be able to pay their taxes in euro from 1 January 1999. The Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise are today publishing a joint press release setting out further details of the arrangements and inviting comments from interested parties on any aspects of the proposals.
