To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the relative position of Sandwell Healthcare NHS Trust in England and Wales in terms of(a) management costs as a percentage of total budget, (b) percentage of surgical cases handled as day cases and (c) costs per completed consultant episode. [53735]

In 1997–98, the planned management costs for Sandwell Healthcare National Health Service Trust were £3.7 million, 5.2 per cent. of their trust income. Total trust management costs for England were planned to be £1.2 billion, 5.1 per cent. of total trust income in England.

In 1996–97 (latest available figures), the Trust treated 69.1 per cent. of its elective surgical admissions as day cases, compared to 53.7 per cent. nationally.

In 1996–97 (latest available) the average cost per Finished Consultant Episode was £850 for the trust. Nationally the average was £1,120.
