To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions when he expects to announce the appointment of the chairmen and other members of the regional development agencies; and if he will make a statement. [54428]

I refer the hon. Member to the answer given on 29 July 1998,Official Report, columns 244–45, to my hon. Friend the Member for Corby (Mr. Hope), concerning the appointment of Chairmen. A further announcement on other board appointments will be made in the Autumn.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he plans to issue further guidance on the criteria which regional chambers must meet in order to be designated for the purposes of regional development agencies. [55195]

I propose to write shortly to representatives of the emerging chambers and to other interested parties setting out our views.
