There are currently 53.5 vacancies for prison officers in the eight London prisons. Details are shown in the table.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has for future work projects for Wandsworth Prison. [52783]

Mr. George Howarth

Funds have been made available for the following works projects at Wandsworth for the current financial yearrefurbish A and B wings (work commenced, to open in the Autumn); convert workshop to chapel/mosque/workshop (work commenced); convert F wing chapel/gym to visits area (work commenced); redevelop existing accommodation to legal visits area (work commenced); new gymnasium (at tender stage); provision of new fire and general alarms (to commence later this financial year); submetering for energy management programme (work almost complete).

The following projects have been identified and will be considered if funds become available this financial year: new external store; reinstate E wing exercise yard; repairs to temporary kitchen; repair chimneys; structural repairs to G and K wing dry area and gable ends to officers' mess.

The following projects have been identified and will be prioritised for bidding in the next financial year, 1999–2000: a new gate, new visitors' centre; new main stores; disperse boilers, new kitchen, new laundry, new industries and training; refurbish E. G. H. and K wings.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many(a) men and (b) women held in each London prison on 20 July were classified as category A inmates. [52785]

Mr. George Howarth

Belmarsh is the only London prison which holds category A prisoners. On 20 July, there were 73 male category A prisoners held in Belmarsh prison. There are currently no category A females held in London prisons. Additionally, 18 male category A prisoners were held in Highdown prison, Surrey, which also serves the London area.
