HC Deb 31 July 1998 vol 317 c856W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has to introduce new guidelines on prescription drugs for prisoners, with particular reference to(a) Largactil, (b) Melleril and (c) other neuroleptic drugs. [54213]

Mr. George Howarth

Published Prison Service healthcare standards set out guidelines on the prescription of medicinal drugs to prisoners. The guidelines require prison doctors to exercise appropriate clinical judgment, and for Prison Service establishments to provide a safe, efficient and cost-effective pharmaceutical service to prisoners which complies with legal requirements, professional standards and ethical codes, commensurate with those in the National Health Service.

There are no plans at present to revise these guidelines.
