§ Mr. CohenTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received about the level of malpractice within the Metropolitan Police. [54037]
§ Mr. MichaelWe have received a number or representations from hon. Members and from members of the public on subjects related to corruption within the Metropolitan Police.
The Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis has publicly stated his determination to tackle corruption in the Metropolitan Police. The Commissioner tells me that, unfortunately, while the overwhelming majority of his officers are honest, professional and brave, and will never do anything wrong throughout their service, there is a small number who are involved in corrupt, dishonest and unethical behaviour. The actions of these officers sap the morale of their honest colleagues and undermine the confidence of the public in the police service.
My right hon. Friend and I are regularly updated by the Commissioner and the Deputy Commissioner on their progress in tackling corruption in the Metropolitan Police.
Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary will be conducting a review into integrity in police forces in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. I welcome this review, which will inform chief constables of good practice and ensure corrective action so that the high standards of service and integrity set by British police officers will be maintained.
