§ Mr. LoveTo ask the Prime Minister if he will list the Lord-Lieutenants and their deputies for Greater London indicating the dates when they were appointed, the term each will serve before re-appointment and the dates when each post will next be due for appointment or reappointment. [53682]
§ The Prime MinisterThis week I have announced the appointment of Sir Peter Imbert QPM as the new Lord Lieutenant of London to succeed Lord Bramall later in the year.
As the appointment of Deputy Lord-Lieutenants is made by Lord Lieutenants, I have asked the Clerk to the Lieutenancy to write to my hon. Friend with the information he has requested.
§ Mr. Jim MurphyTo ask the Prime Minister if he will assess the factors which led to an increase in the cost of lord-lieutenants in England over the past 10 years. [53278]
§ The Prime Minister[holding answer 29 July 1998]: The majority of Lord-Lieutenants receive assistance from their local authority by the voluntary provision of accommodation and staff; and some meet all or most of their day-to-day running costs from their own resources. But contributions from these two sources have 602W fallen over the last 10 years and the proportion of total expenditure on Lord-Lieutenants which is met from central Government funds has risen accordingly.
