To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how much his Department spent on IT itemising(a) personal computers, (b) main-frame, (c) mini-computers and (d) file servers in the last year for which figure are available. [52880]

Mr. Mudie

My Department has spent the following amounts on buying new IT products in the 1997–98 financial year:

  • Department For Education and Employment Head Office: £5.06 million made up of
    • Personal Computers (including portable computers): £4.08 million
    • Mainframe: £0.03 million
    • Servers (including mini-computers): £0.95 million
  • Employment Service

The majority of purchases of these items were as part of projects which also included the purchase of other products and services, such as printers and installation or configuration. It is not possible to isolate the spend on these items. The Employment Service total capital spend on buying IT was £11 million for 1997–98.
