Mr. Burstow

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how much his Department expects to spend in each year from 1998–99 to 2000–01 on vehicle replacements. [54995]

Mr. Ron Davies

I will reply to the hon. Member as soon as possible and place a copy of my reply in the Library of the House.

Mr. Burstow

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales, pursuant to his answer of 28 July 1998,Official Report, columns 180–81, concerning vehicle replacement, what guidance he has issued concerning the replacement policy for vehicle fleets. [54479]

Mr. Ron Davies

My Department currently operates a policy of replacing diesel driven vehicles with those which run on unleaded petrol and which are fitted with 'three way' catalytic converters. This policy is reviewed annually as part of the Department's Green Housekeeping Action Plan which takes account of developments in alternative fuels, having regard also to economic, financial and environmental factors.

Where practicable, these factors will also be applied to the replacement of the specialist diesel powered highway vehicles.
