HC Deb 31 July 1998 vol 317 c693W
Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what contingency plans the Government have made in the event of a deterioration in the human rights situation in Burma. [53663]

Mr. Fatchett

I refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave my hon. Friend the Member for Bolton, North East (Mr. Crausby) on 29 July 1998,Official Report, column 303. We have been deeply concerned by the regime's recent interference with Aung San Suu Kyi's freedom of movement and association. I have made clear to the Burmese Foreign Minister on 28 July that such harassment is unacceptable and I called on the Burmese authorities to enter into immediate dialogue with the NLD and other opposition groups. We will continue to monitor the situation closely.
