HC Deb 31 July 1998 vol 317 cc759-60W
Mr. Rendel

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what estimate his Department has made of the average savings in benefit expenditure for each unemployed claimant of benefits who gains full-time employment. [53959]

Mr. Denham

The cost of unemployment-related benefits per unemployed person per year, is estimated at 1998–99 benefit levels at £3,8501. The extent of any savings arising from individuals moving from benefits into work would depend on their entitlement to in-work benefits such as Family Credit, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit.

Note:

1 For the purposes of calculating this figure, unemployment related benefits are defined as Jobseeker's Allowance, and Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit payments to people in receipt of Jobseeker's Allowance.
