To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many patients joined National Heath Service waiting lists in(a) 1996 and (b) 1997. [53017]

[holding answer 29 July 1998]: The latest figures on admissions to waiting lists suggest that in 1996–97 around 4.1 million patients joined National Health Service waiting lists.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what estimate he has made of the number of patients in England and Wales suspended from NHS surgical waiting lists at 30 June. [53734]
