HC Deb 30 July 1998 vol 317 c524W
Mr. Chaytor

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is his Department's policy towards the Irish Government's recent initiative on global nuclear disarmament known as The New Agenda Coalition; and if he will make a statement. [51680]

Mr. Tony Lloyd

The "New Agenda" statement calls for a clear commitment from the Nuclear Weapon States to the speedy, final and total elimination of nuclear weapons. We have made clear our commitment to the global elimination of nuclear weapons. We have taken some important steps towards this goal in the Strategic Defence Review and elsewhere.

Mr. Chaytor

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is his policy on the South African Conference on Disarmament's proposal to establish an ad-hoc committee on nuclear disarmament; and if he will make a statement. [51681]

Mr. Tony Lloyd

We are actively considering how best to follow up internationally the initiatives on nuclear disarmament set out in the Strategic Defence Review.

Mr. Chaytor

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what plans he has to report to the participatory nation states of the Conference on Disarmament on the conclusions of the Strategic Defence Review; and if he will make a statement. [51682]
