Ms Jowell

In 1998/99, we are fundingthe "Respect" anti-smoking campaign at a cost of £1 million, which is targeting 11–15 year olds, addressing why young people start smoking and seeking to create a positive lifestyle as relevant to the two thirds of teenagers who don't smoke as to the third who do; and the Health Education Authority's adult anti-smoking campaign at a cost of £5.5 million, which especially targets young people (and in particular women) in the 16–24 age range.

Both the teenage and adult smoking education campaigns include information on the dangers associated with passive smoking.

Our future plans to tackle smoking prevalence will be set out in the forthcoming White Paper on Tobacco Control.
