Mr. Prior

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what assessment he has made of the number of jobs in the UK which are dependent upon the motor industry. [53185]

Mr. Battle

It is estimated that 714,600 jobs at the end of March 1998 were directly reliant on the UK automotive industry: 222,300 in vehicle and component manufacturing and 492,300 in the retail, distribution, servicing and repair (but excluding petrol sales) sectors.Source: Labour Market Trends.
