HC Deb 29 July 1998 vol 317 cc282-3W
26. Mr. Tony Clarke

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what steps she is taking to provide assistance to the most vulnerable groups in Indonesia. [51347]

Clare Short

Indonesian community groups are working to prepare a Community Recovery Programme. I have agreed that we should provide an amount up to £6 million needed to complete the programme design and run its first six months of operation as a pilot phase. The Community Recovery Programme will provide rapid response grant assistance for the most vulnerable people affected by the crisis in Indonesia. It will focus particularly on people without land or jobs and look to meet needs otherwise unmet by existing support mechanisms in such areas as food security, basic social services, income generation and job creation. Ultimately, the Programme will look to secure funding of up to £25 million from various donors.
