§ Mr. Mike O'Brien[holding answer 28 July 1998]: The Home Office Central London estate provides 41 secure spaces for parking bicycles. The formal facilities include:
the provision of a bicycle shed in one car park where bicycles can be chained to metal loopsthe provision in another car park of spaces where bicycles can be chained to a metal frame secured to the ground by concretespaces in a basement storage room.Generally, there is some provision for parking bicycles for most offices and sites throughout the rest of the Home Office estate (including those occupied by the Agencies). However, details of these are not available centrally and could only be provided at disproportionate cost.

Existing measures to encourage the use of cycling to work include the provision of secure cycle parking, showers, and interest free loans for bicycle purchase.
Measures to increase the proportion of employees cycling to work are being considered as part of the development of green transport plans for building occupied by the Department and its Agencies.
