HC Deb 29 July 1998 vol 317 cc353-4W
Mr. Breed

To ask the President of the Board of Trade who will have responsibility for investigating cases of carbon monoxide poisoning following the introduction of competition into the domestic gas market. [50928]

Mr. Battle

I am advised that Regulation 7(14) of the Gas Safety (Management) Regulations 1996 places a specific duty on the person who has supplied the gas to cause an investigation to be carried out to establish, as far as is reasonably practicable, the cause of the escape and accumulation of the carbon monoxide gas. During last Autumn and Winter, my Department circulated a safety advice leaflet on the dangers of carbon monoxide, through doctors' surgeries and direct to 19 million households with their gas bills. A new campaign is planned for later this year, to coincide with the onset of colder weather.
