HC Deb 28 July 1998 vol 317 cc150-5W
Mr. Boswell

To ask the President of the Board of Trade how many power projects contracted under the NFFO are at the planning approval stage; and what is the generation capacity of these projects. [51764]

Mr. Battle

[holding answer 21 July 1998]: As at 31 March 1998 there were seventy-nine NFFO3 projects for which planning applications had been approved. A further twelve had submitted planning applications to the relevant planning authority. Details of these NFFO3 projects, including their contracted capacities, are set out in the table. Comprehensive information about NFFO4 projects' progress in obtaining planning permission is not yet available.

Mr. Boswell

To ask the President of the Board of Trade how many power stations contracted under the NFFO above 7.5 megawatts are now in the course of construction; and where they are located. [51765]

Mr. Battle

[holding answer 21 July 1998]: There are nine NFFO3 projects with contracted capacities exceeding 7.5 megawatts DNC (declared net capacity) for which

Mr. Boswell

To ask the President of the Board of Trade how much electricity is currently being generated by projects contracted under the NFFO. [51766]

Mr. Battle

[holding answer 21 July 1998]: Electricity generated from all NFF01–4 projects from 1 April 1997 until 31 March 1998 was 2,732 Gwh.

Mr. Boswell

To ask the President of the Board of Trade if she will estimate the savings in CO2, emissions from the use of (a) all power stations and (b) biomass power stations contracted under the NFFO. [51767] planning applications have been approved. Of these, five are operational. Details of these NFFO3 projects, including their registered site addresses, are set out in the table. Comprehensive information of similar-sized NFFO4 projects' progress in obtaining planning permission is not yet available.

Mr. Battle

[holding answer 21 July 1998]: I expect renewable energy projects contracted under NFFOs 1–5 to achieve savings in CO2, emissions of about 2 million tonnes of carbon. Ten to twenty per cent. of this will be attributable to biomass power stations, depending on the number of projects which are successfully commissioned.

Mr. Boswell

To ask the President of the Board of Trade how many of the proposed power stations which have secured contracts under the NFFO have been refused planning permission by the relevant planning authority. [51768]

Mr. Battle

[holding answer 21 July 1998]: Information about planning permission refusals for NFFO1 and NFFO2 projects is not held centrally. As at 31 March 1998 fifteen NFFO3 projects had been refused planning permission. Appeals had been lodged in respect of twelve of these projects, of which five have been dismissed. Comprehensive information about NFFO4 projects' progress in obtaining planning permission is not yet available.
