To ask the Attorney-General how many of the vehicles due for replacement by(a) his Department and (b) bodies listed in the National Asset Register in (i) 1998–99, (ii) 1999–2000 and (iii) 2000–01 will be replaced by vehicles using (1) petrol, (2) diesel, (3) natural gas, (4) electric batteries and (5) other. [52617]

The Attorney-General

I refer the hon. Member to my reply to him on 23 July 1998,Official Report, column 603.

Since that reply the Crown Prosecution Service have leased a further petrol engined vehicle making a total of 34 vehicles; 26 of which have diesel engines and 8 have unleaded petrol engines.

The dates for their replacement are:

  1. (i) 1998–99: 13 vehicles (including 1 petrol)
  2. (ii) 1999–2000: 12 vehicles (including 4 petrol)
  3. (iii) 2000–01: 9 vehicles (including 3 petrol).

The planned replacements for 1998–99 will be one vehicle using unleaded petrol and 12 using diesel fuel. The Crown Prosecution Service is monitoring development of alternative fuels and, where these prove to be less harmful to the environment and as economical, staff will be encouraged to adopt them.
