§ Mr. DenhamA full breakdown of the cycling spaces throughout the Department is not available in the format requested and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. At the last count there were approximately 4,125 spaces in total.
To encourage staff to travel to and from work by bicycle, 20 local Commuting Action Plans are to be put in place throughout the Department from 1 April 1999. We also plan to hold a Departmental "Car Free Day" this autumn.

However, at least 20 local Commuting Action Plans (CAPs) are presently being developed for introduction throughout DSS by March 1999. Each will address the means by which staff travel to and from work and will include proposals for the encouragement of a greater use of bicycles in the areas where CAPs will be introduced.
A further measure to highlight the use of bicycles will be a departmental 'Car Free Day' to be held this Autumn.
