§ Mr. DalyellTo ask the Secretary of State for International Development what action she is taking to monitor fisheries in British Indian Ocean Territory, and to designate marine-protected areas. [50019]
§ Mr. Tony Lloyd[holding answer 20 July 1998]: I have been asked to reply.
The tools used to monitor the British Indian Ocean Territory fisheries include a licensing regime, enforcement via a fisheries patrol vessel, observer programmes, ad hoc research, and assessment of log book returns. The implications of designating marine protected areas, particularly for enforcement and legislation, are being considered.
