HC Deb 24 July 1998 vol 316 c713W
Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what action she is taking to monitor fisheries in British Indian Ocean Territory, and to designate marine-protected areas. [50019]

Mr. Tony Lloyd

[holding answer 20 July 1998]: I have been asked to reply.

The tools used to monitor the British Indian Ocean Territory fisheries include a licensing regime, enforcement via a fisheries patrol vessel, observer programmes, ad hoc research, and assessment of log book returns. The implications of designating marine protected areas, particularly for enforcement and legislation, are being considered.
