HC Deb 23 July 1998 vol 316 cc634-5W
Mr. Barnes

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many stroke units there are in the NHS; and where they are located. [51077]

Mr. Boateng

[holding answer 21 July 1998]: We do not collect data centrally on the numbers and distribution of specialist stroke units.

The organisation of health services, including services for people who have had a stroke, and the manner in which they are delivered are matters for health authorities, taking account of the needs of the local population and the priorities set for the use of the available resources.

The Clinical Standards Advisory Group published a report on clinical effectiveness on 3 June 1998, using stroke as a marker condition. The report contains recommendations to help ensure consistency of treatment across the country. This includes access to appropriate rehabilitation services, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy, where they can effectively assist recovery.
