HC Deb 23 July 1998 vol 316 c646W
Sir Robert Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many prisoners completed(a) sex offender treatment programmes and (b) programmes accredited as helping rehabilitation in each of the last three years for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement. [51744]

Mr. McLeish

The Scottish Prison Service has key performance indicators for the numbers of prisoners completing sex offender programmes and cognitive skills programmes. However, targets in this area were established only from 1996–97 onwards, and reliable figures for earlier years are not available centrally.

The figures for 1996–97 and 1997–98 are shown in the table.

Programme 1996–97 1997–98
Sex offenders 67 91
Cognitive skills 381 635

Although other programmes aimed at reducing reoffending are also available, detailed information on the numbers of prisoners completing such programmes is not held centrally at present.
