HC Deb 23 July 1998 vol 316 c673W
Mr. Nigel Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what plans he has to reinstate bridleways severed by motorway construction and road improvement works; and if he will make a statement. [51382]

Ms Glenda Jackson

The Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions has powers, conferred on him by the Highways Act 1980, to stop up or divert bridleways affected by highway works. The power to stop up bridleways is not used unless the Secretary of State is satisfied that another reasonably convenient route is available or is to be provided. Reinstatement of any particular bridleway will depend on the circumstances.
