§ Mr. FatchettThe Algerian Government's second periodic report under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) has now been examined by the Human Rights Committee in Geneva. We welcome this example of Algeria's co-operation with UN human rights mechanisms. We note the concerns expressed by the Committee and hope that Algeria will act upon the692W Committee's recommendations concerning the full protection and promotion of all human rights in Algeria, including the right to life.

§ Mr. FatchettThe mandate of the special mission is the responsibility of the United Nations. We welcomed the UN Secretary-General's 7 July announcement of the forthcoming visit to Algeria, under UN auspices, by a panel of eminent persons. We look forward to hearing the mission's findings.
