Mr. McNamara

To ask the Prime Minister how many reports the Social Exclusion Unit has produced to date; and what areas they are currently examining. [51311]

The Prime Minister

[holding answer 20 July 1998]: In the first phase of its work, the Social Exclusion Unit has produced two reports "Social Exclusion and Truancy" and "Rough Sleeping" and the Unit is now involved in following them up. Copies of the reports are available in the libraries of the House.

The Unit's third priority for its first phase was developing integrated and sustainable approaches to the problems of the worst housing estates and a report on this work will be published shortly.

The Unit was also asked to focus on improving mechanisms for integrating the work of departments, local authorities and other agencies at national level and on the ground
