§ Mr. MeacherTrials of genetically modified crops are approved by the relevant Secretaries of State under Part IV of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Genetically Modified Organisms (Deliberate Release) Regulations 1992 (amended 1995 and 1997). Together these implement Directive 90/220/EEC on the deliberate release of genetically modified organisms to the environment and the subsequent amendments to the directive.
