To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what steps the Government are taking to enhance the UN's ability to mount peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. [49605]

Mr. George Robertson

The Strategic Defence Review has reaffirmed that the UK will continue to make an important military contribution to the United Nations. We are planning a significant UK initiative to underline the Government's commitment to support UN operations by declaring a much larger proportion of our front line capabilities as potentially available to the UN, including all of our rapidly deployable forces; and by incorporating this declaration in a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the UN.
