To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what plans his Department has for long-term monitoring of the effects of sludge dumping in Liverpool Bay; and what will be the role of water companies in such monitoring. [51383]

The arrangements for monitoring maritime sewage-sludge dumping sites around the United Kingdom, including Liverpool Bay, are described in "Towards 2000: Marine Monitoring in the 1990s", the fifth report of the UK Marine Pollution Monitoring Group, published this year by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science.
