Mr. Harvey

To ask the Secretary of State for Health when the public aspects of the public inquiry into cardiac surgery at the Bristol Royal Infirmary will start; what factors will determine the start date; and if he will make a statement. [50479]

Mr. Milburn

It is our intention to begin the public inquiry as soon as is practicable. Following my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State's oral announcement on 18 June 1998,Official Report, columns 529–39, Professor Ian Kennedy is currently considering all aspects of the inquiry which he will be leading, including the terms of reference and the selection of other panel members. We will be making a further announcement shortly.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if Her Majesty's Government will meet the costs of group legal representation for families bereaved following malpractice at Bristol Royal Infirmary. [50478]
